The climate in the desert was very difficult to manage so Hashem surrounded the Jews with clouds in all six directions to protect them from the scorching sun, and hot desert sand (the Jewish people walked on clouds). The clouds protected them from their enemies and all the creepy crawly insects that live in the dessert. In merit of all this we celebrate sukkot-thanking Hashem for the special care we got in the desert
